Many of the older ATV models were equipped with drum brakes on both the front and rear wheels. Over time, disk brakes have proved to be more efficient, however, many manufacturers still prefer to install drums on the rear axle. In fact, this is done for a reason, as a vehicle brakes using mainly the front wheels. The rear brakes are activated during emergency braking, so unless an ATV is used in motorsports, the difference between the rear rotors and drums is almost unnoticeable. Working in tandem with the shoes providing a friction surface, the drums create the braking effect you need.

Friction and heat that the drums are exposed to make them gradually wear out. Dirt, water, and mud aren’t very beneficial for these parts either, so their deterioration is unavoidable.
