    • If you think all oils are the same, your car will know the difference. Take a closer look at engine oils and car maintenance with Castrol EDGE.

What does oil do in your car?

Oil covers and protects every internal part of your engine.

When engine parts rub against one another, oil is always there between them, reducing friction and preventing damage – even though the pressures and forces are incredibly high. Oil also has special ingredients that suspend tiny particles of combustion soot, preventing the accumulation of dirt and deposits, and fight high temperature oxidation, keeping the oil flowing smoothly.

Manufacturers specify the correct oil for their vehicles – your handbook will tell you the correct specification, which will usually be on the oil bottle’s back label.

      WHAT DOES CASTROL EDGE DO?

Castrol EDGE has Titanium Fluid Strength Technology that has been shown to double the oil’s film strength. This increases the performance of the protective film as metal parts are forced together, and reduces friction, allowing your engine to deliver maximum performance.

How do I know which oil the manufacturer has approved?

In your vehicle handbook, the manufacturer will define the right oil specification for your engine.

Industry standards are set out by the American Petroleum Institute (API) and European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) who periodically publish a series of performance standards to take account of the changing performance of modern engines.

Some manufacturers, who are pushing the boundaries of technology, require additional performance characteristics from the oil. In order to maintain the warranty of your vehicle, you should ensure you adhere to the manufacturer's guidelines.

      WHAT DOES CASTROL EDGE DO?

Castrol EDGE is recommended by leading car manufacturers with many new cars leaving the factory containing Castrol EDGE. Just check the back of the bottle to make sure you pick the right Castrol EDGE product for your car.

Why do I need to change the oil?

Oil is constantly battling against the stresses inside the engine. These can be thermal, at the hottest parts of the engine; chemical in resisting the acids, particulates and water that are made during combustion; or physical, in resisting the tremendous forces and speeds in modern engines.

Each manufacturer balances these stresses against the quality of oil they recommend, and advises an appropriate oil drain interval to give the right protection and performance. The manufacturer’s drain interval can be found in your vehicle handbook. Some modern cars will also indicate when an oil change is due on the instrument cluster.

When the oil is changed, it is prudent to change the filter at the same time. The oil filter collects all the dirt and combustion by-products which the oil catches on its journey around the engine. Fitting a fresh filter with new oil will keep your engine in the best condition for maximum performance.

      WHAT DOES CASTROL EDGE DO?

Castrol EDGE exceeds the required standard in manufacturer and industry tests. In addition, Castrol EDGE has the strength of the Titanium Fluid Strength™ technology system. This reduces contact between metal surfaces, reduces friction and reacts under pressure, giving you the confidence to demand maximum performance from your engine throughout the drain interval.

Should I check the oil level?

Different cars have different appetites for oil consumption, but one thing is certain: running at a low oil level puts more stress on the oil than the designers intended and can seriously reduce the life of both the oil and engine.

The oil level can be checked by using the dipstick under the bonnet. Your handbook will show you the location of the dipstick, and advise the best and safest method to check the oil. Some modern vehicles have an electronic oil level sensor which will indicate when it is time to top the engine up.
