Most of the modern snowmobiles are equipped with a fuel injection system which, in most cases, is perfectly tuned from the factory. Managed by the engine control unit (ECU), the system uses pre-programmed fuel maps that define the injector opening and closing time in accordance with the current crankshaft and throttle positions, RPM, temperature, fuel pressure, valvetrain characteristics, and other parameters. This time is measured in milliseconds, and the longer the injector stays open, the more fuel gets into the cylinder. But should any of the abovementioned parameters seriously change, the fuel map has to be reconsidered.
Such a necessity may come if the motor has been modified with an aftermarket turbo- or supercharger, performance injectors, more effective cams, and so on. Aftermarket fuel management systems give you the opportunity to alter the fuel settings and adapt them to your new equipment. Unlike the stock ECUs which are not meant to be readjusted, aftermarket controllers offer much greater flexibility in this regard, along with a user-friendly interface and other benefits.
