There are some characteristics particular to the engines of powersports vehicles. Featuring a relatively small displacement and just one or two cylinders in most cases, they have more in common with motorcycles than with cars, although the main principles of internal combustion remain the same. All of these motors need clean air, oil, and fuel, and the systems responsible for supplying these substances have to be configured properly and work well. When it comes to the air intake system, its configuration is determined by the motor type and operating conditions.

Truth be told, these conditions for most side-by-sides are far from being ideal. Off-roading, working in the field, or racing in the desert or mountains put the engine to the test, and sand, dust, and debris should be effectively trapped by the air filter. The role of this part can hardly be overestimated, and manufacturers constantly experiment with different structures and materials composing the filtering media – there can be polyurethane used in foam filters, fabric, or paper. Many fabric filters are washable and reusable; they require special cleaner and oil to restore their properties once in a while.

Some filters are of double construction, with an outer cylindrical filter having a separate insert. The former is placed in the housing and traps large debris, while the latter is responsible for filtering the smallest dust particles. Whatever construction you have, make sure it’s well sealed to avoid air leaks; also, it’s recommended to wipe the inner surface of the housing when you replace the filter. If sand and dust find their way into the engine, its service life will be greatly reduced because of abrasion and rapid wear inside the cylinders.

One more factor that can be dangerous for the engine is water, so if you’re going to cross a stream or drive in deep puddles, make sure your air inlet is high enough to avoid sucking in water and hydrolocking the motor. Our online store offers a vast array of snorkels supplying dry and clean air to the engine. While featuring robust, elaborate constructions, these parts are available in different sizes and usually come with strong brackets ensuring reliable mounting. Moreover, our snorkels are resistant to heat and vibration, while their good look will add some aggressiveness and style to your UTV.

Besides piping and filters, here you will find intake manifolds, throttle bodies, and related sensors such as the T-MAP and TPS. In high-performance side-by-sides like the Polaris RZR XP Turbo or some supercharged models, things get more complex. Such UTVs boast locomotive low-end torque and mind-numbing acceleration achieved thanks to forced induction systems. Their parts have to be properly cooled and lubed, making these vehicles somewhat more sensitive to the quality of oil and regular servicing. But still, the extra power they put out is significant, and various turbo- and supercharger kits get more and more popular among racers and driving enthusiasts.
