While the motor generates power, the transmission is responsible for optimizing this power at different speeds and loads. The torque created by an internal combustion engine remains high enough in a relatively narrow range, and the gearbox enables you to keep it running within this very range with maximum possible output and fuel efficiency. As for the drivetrain system, it transfers torque from the gearbox to the wheels, and its type greatly defines off-road performance. Some models have one drive axle, others have two or even more drive axles equipped with a locking differential.
When it comes to all-terrain vehicles, they can be chain- or shaft-driven. Market-leading manufacturers tend to use shafts in most of their models, although some older ATVs along with smaller and less powerful quads for kids are equipped with a chain rotating the rear axle. Any of these systems has its pros and cons and needs proper maintenance. The chain has to always be lubed and tightened well, and it's wise to check it before venturing out. Shaft drive allows for designing reliable and capable AWD systems that require gear oil, and this liquid has to be regularly changed and remain free from dirt and water.
A weak spot of many drive systems is their CV joints, or their rubber boots, to be exact. A quad is hardly ever employed on a paved road, and there are plenty of sharp stones, tree branches, and other things that often remain unnoticed on the ground and tear the boots. It's crucial to notice such damage timely and replace the boot unless you want to replace the whole joint that gets open to dust and water. There are different repair kits including boots, clamps, grease, and even special tools making the replacement process not as complicated. Reputable companies produce their boots from strong and durable sorts of rubber, so they don't crack after just a season of use.
The most popular type of transmission in ATVs, side-by-sides, and snowmobiles is a CVT, or PVT, like Polaris calls this mechanism in its models. With the introduction of the Trail Boss in the mid-1980s, the company actually pioneered the use of this assembly on the ATV market, just a couple of years after such a setup had become popular in sporty sleds by this brand. These days, CVTs are more complex, effective, and durable, but still, they need some maintenance including visual inspection, cleaning, and replacing the belt and some hardware. Besides, there are hydrostatic CVT assemblies that use hydraulic fluid and need it to be changed together with the filter.
A large assortment of powersports drivetrain & transmission parts along with numerous lubricants are available in our online store. Here you can find CVT belts and pulleys, CV joints and boots, drivetrain and transmission bearings, seals and gaskets, rebuild kits, and so on. Also, we carry specific tools and sets enabling you to do the job in a safe and easy way – clutch holding and removal tools, bearing installers/removers, etc. Whether you need parts or liquids for regular maintenance, or something is broken and requires an urgent repair, look no further.
Introduced back in the mid-1980, the first mass-production four-wheel ATVs turned out to be successful and gradually superseded the three-wheelers that dominated the market before. Featuring good off-road qualities, models like the Suzuki LT250R, Honda FourTrax TRX250R, and Yamaha Banshee 350 opened new possibilities in motorsport, agriculture, active recreation, and so on. Since then, four-wheelers have greatly evolved and became more aggressive, capable, and powerful. Unlike the first models with final chain drive, the modern ones have more in common with crossovers and are equipped with driveshafts, CV joints, 4WD systems, locking differentials, etc.
Many of the modern ATV drivetrain systems are controlled by electronics and allow you to switch between 2WD and 4WD modes by simply pushing a button. If needed, you can lock the front differential and use engine power in a more optimal way. While delivering decent performance, the drivetrain requires proper maintenance in turn, and it's recommended to keep an eye on this mechanism to avoid damages. The area of driveshaft oil seals must not be covered with oil, CV joint rubber boots have to be intact, and there must be no suspicious noises and abnormal vibration while riding. If you've faced any drivetrain or transmission issues, spotting and resolving the problem will require some skills and quality replacement parts.
As for the new components for your all-terrain vehicle, our online store is always at your disposal. We carry a wide assortment of ATV transmission parts and drivetrain components manufactured by leading aftermarket companies.
