There are several ways that rotation can be transferred from one shaft to another, and belt drive is one of the most popular ways used. It can be found in pretty much any motorized means of transport, and powersports vehicles are no exception. The most widespread are flexible drive belts used in continuously variable transmissions. Timing belts are not used as frequently – most quads and sleds employ a robust and durable metal chain for synchronizing the valvetrain. As for auxiliary belts, they are responsible for rotating an alternator, water pump, or other equipment meant to ensure the smooth operation of the motor.

Actually, auxiliary belts are not that common in powersports vehicles, although they can be found in some side-by-sides and snowmobiles. The point is, most of their engines are compact enough, so the water pump can be powered via inner gear drive, while an alternator is usually a built-in system (magneto) having much in common with motorcycles. But still, serpentine or cogged auxiliary belts can be used in some relatively large motors. For instance, in the so-called "big block" 700 or 800 cc engines by Polaris, a water pump and oil pump are engaged by the belt.

Soon or late, it will require replacement, but the good news is that modern belts are exceptionally durable. Thanks to strong materials and special reinforced structure, their reliability and lifespan in practice are close to metal chains, but unlike the chains, the belts are not prone to stretching and don't need any lubrication. Of course, it makes sense to install the belts by reputable companies that use innovative technologies and aramid-reinforced EPDM compounds, special fibers and polyester cords, elaborate designs, and other effective solutions that ensure resistance to stresses, aging, heat, oils, and chemicals. In some motors, belt replacement is no easy task, while the failure of this part means the engine stops unless the new belt is installed.
