Personal Watercraft "PWC" Reed Valve Systems

Personal watercraft are becoming increasingly popular as they provide extreme fun in water recreational activities. Most PWCs are powered by inboard two-stroke motors that operate a pump-jet, which ultimately propels the vehicle. Two-stroke engines use reed valve systems to control the intake of the air-fuel mixture. This type of valve is perfectly tailored to the architecture of these motors, as it optimizes the delivery of fuel and improves efficiency and performance.

In a typical two-stroke engine, when the piston moves up, the crankcase experiences a sudden drop in pressure and the mixture is sucked into the engine through the reed valve. When the piston moves down, the air-fuel blend is forced into the combustion chamber. To make that happen, the valve remains closed preventing the mix from going back. It features a series of petals that allow the air and fuel to flow in when pressure falls and seal off the intake when the pressure grows. Over time, the reeds get chipped or cracked and do not seal properly causing performance and starting issues.
