A snowmobile is an excellent machine that can get your adrenaline pumping the second you squeeze the throttle and let go of brakes. Unlike wheeled motor vehicles, snowmobiles run on tracks that have a large footprint and offer great grip even on deep powder. Handlebars are connected to skis that allow for steering your machine. Older models use steel skis that are durable enough but slide worse than their modern plastic counterparts. Also, they may wear out fairly quickly when sliding on ice, hard-packed snow, or gravel. To protect your original metal skis, you can use skins made from durable, impact-resistant plastic.
These skins are offered in a variety of sizes and colors. Usually, they are wider than your stock skis and can create unbelievably smooth flotation on deep snow and allow for maintaining high speed on wet or sticky snow patches. Skins are molded from thick polyethylene plastics to fit your stock skis perfectly and prevent ice and snow from freezing to them. This problem can also be solved with the installation of modern aftermarket skis made from durable plastics. Depending on the terrain and your riding style, you can choose skis of different shape, width, and length to achieve better results.
The wider the ski, the better your machine will perform in deep powder snow thanks to more even weight distribution. If you tend to ride on established trails, you’d better choose narrow skis with a long keel and straight edges. Note that this design is less suitable for snowmobile enthusiasts with an aggressive riding style. To achieve better cornering and less steering efforts, it is recommended to install skis with a short keel. Plastic skis are usually equipped with ski loops that make their front end more rigid. Wear bars or carbides are added to the plastic ski construction to prevent their accelerated wear when riding on ice or frozen ground. You can find all that and much more in our online catalog of snowmobile skis and carbides.
