The power produced by a two-stroke or four-stroke internal combustion engine is transferred through a continuously variable transmission to the track drive mechanism of the sled.

The transmission output shaft rotates the drive sprocket with teeth that are meshed with openings on the track to put it in motion. The track itself rotates around the track rail system equipped with sliders designed to reduce friction between the track and the railing, and idler or bogie wheels needed to support and guide the track and also ensure the required tension and alignment for smooth and efficient operation. If you ride your machine hard enough while conquering some of the most challenging trails, some parts of its drive and suspension system will become worn out and eventually fail.

If the lugs on your track are too worn and it slips even on lightly packed snow, then it is time to replace it with an aftermarket analog. If some of the track clips are damaged or missing, you can easily install the replacement to reinforce the edges of track windows. For those who plan on riding on frozen lakes, rivers, or hard-packed snow, regular snowmobile tracks with treads intended for powder may not create enough friction on such smooth surface. In this case, to increase traction and improve control, you can add studs made from stainless steel or carbide to your track.
