It’s safe to say that starting your vehicle is as important as being able to stop it. Whether you are riding over rough terrain or around your farm, you should be able to slow and bring it to a safe halt when needed. To maintain proper control over your powersports vehicle, make sure all components of your braking system are in good condition and its fluid is up to par. That specific liquid is recommended to be charged periodically. Timing depends on your type of vehicle, riding conditions, and other factors.
Most current powersports vehicles are equipped with a hydraulic braking system. It is considered to be more efficient compared to the mechanical one. It uses a specially developed fluid to transfer the energy you apply to your lever or pedal to pads causing them to squeeze the disc or a steel cable which forces shoes against the drum. For proper operation of the entire system, that fluid should be clean and at the proper level. There are two main factors that affect its effectiveness and longevity.
First of all, air can enter the lines of the system. It reduces its functionality and can even result in a loss of brakes. Aside from that, it contains moisture which also undermines the proper operation of the system. The aftermarket currently offers two main types of powersports brake fluids: glycol- and silicone-based, the best of which are offered on our digital shelves. Some of them feature a special formula that prevents the absorption of water resulting in more miles of reliable braking performance. Others are developed especially for operating under extreme riding conditions. They have very high boiling points. To choose the right fluid for your vehicle, you should check your owner’s manual. This is because some models require silicone-based fluids, while others can use glycol-based ones.
