To unleash the full potential of your ATV, UTV, or snowmobile, you need a dialed-in suspension setting. This is when you cannot do without the right shocks and struts. These components are designed to allow the suspension to move up and down thus adapting to road irregularities. As a result, tires are capable of gaining proper grip to the road for better acceleration, turning, and effective braking. Shocks & struts also play a big part when it comes to a comfortable ride. This is because they absorb and damp shock impulses converting their kinetic energy into heat that is further dissipated.
Shocks and struts should be able to withstand not only all the impacts of the rocky road surface but also support the weight of your vehicle. While being similar in their function and construction, these suspension components are actually not the same. For example, utility type ATVs are most commonly equipped with struts on the front. They are cylindrical in shape and have a spring around them. These units are attached to the frame and bolted to the spindle. When they are installed, there is no need for the upper control arm. Sport quads are equipped with shocks on both front and rear. In the front, they are mounted to the frame and lower control arm. At the rear, they will differ depending on the suspension type. They are also cylindrical and have a spring around the outside. However, their both ends have holes for installation. There are also adjustable gas shocks available.
Most UTVs come with shocks on both front and rear. Most of the modern stock vehicles have shocks with 5-way preload adjustment. Many riders upgrade their UTVs with aftermarket coilover shocks to improve their handling and ride quality. When it comes to snowmobiles, some of the current models are equipped with gas shocks, while others feature hydraulic ones. Just like any other suspension parts, shocks and struts can wear out due to lots of jumping, racing, or heavy loads. To restore your powersports vehicle to its peak condition and enjoy a comfortable ride, don’t wait too long to replace your worn units with new ones.
