Honda Powersports Maintenance
Honda is one of the best-known names in the hottest powersports segments. Not only it is the most influential ATV manufacturer, it is the leader in UTVs as well. Like in all other industries where the Honda brand is present, its unbeatable reputation is based on quality, value, performance, and innovation. In 1967, the team of designers and engineers at Honda led by Osamu Takeuchi started developing a recreational vehicle that, unlike a motorcycle, could be used in the off-season. The three-wheeler that appeared as a result of their work launched the brand-new market as the world's first ATV, dubbed ATC at the time (short for All-Terrain Cycle). It debuted in America in 1970 as the US90 and was later renamed the ATC90. It brought Honda enormous success and actually built an entire ATV industry. The original model featured an 89cc four-stroke motor that made 7 horsepower directed through a dual-range four-speed transmission; its fat tires enabled traction on snow, mud, and sand. The growing demand for similar vehicles caused the introduction of the ATC110 by the end of the 1970s. A good deal of this demand came from farmers who used these agile all-terrain machines for their ranching and agricultural needs.
Several new models followed, with the next milestone marked by the debut of the Honda ATC200E Big Red back in 1982. It was the first ATC engineered for utility purposes, and unlike the original ATC whose off-road capability was based on balloon tires, the newcomer featured a true telescopic-fork front suspension. The driving force was a 192cc engine mated to a five-speed dual-range gearbox, offering more low-end torque to make towing, seeding, fertilizing, and similar jobs easier. Racing has always been a crucial part of Honda; in 1981, the ATC250R was introduced, the first high-performance two-stroke ATC that featured plenty of tech borrowed from motocross. In 1984, Honda's ATVs got another wheel; their first four-wheeler was named the TRX200, fitted with a four-stroke single-cylinder engine teamed with a five-speed dual-range transmission with shaft drive and reverse. Racks both in the front and rear made it a versatile machine suitable for many kinds of work. Overall, the 1980s were rich in innovative, best-selling models. The FourTrax 250R (also dubbed TRX250R) saw the world in 1986 and quickly became an influential high-performance ATV, with features that are still present in modern sport ATVs. The FourTrax 300 lineup that appeared two years later turned out to be the most popular ATV ever, sold in more than 530,000 machines.
Honda has always responded to ever-growing market demands with breakthrough designs and models that could hardly fit in any of the existing categories. It was so with the Rancher line that is considered by many as the most versatile ATV, as well as with the 2003 FourTrax Rincon that is arguably the most comfortable ATV in the world. Today, Honda powersports vehicles lead the industry, with innovative engineering and technology being the driving force behind everything from Honda's revolutionary ATVs with power steering and torque-sensitive diffs to AquaTrax watercraft with breakthrough hulls and GPScape systems.
Today's Honda lineup of side-by-side / UTV models includes versatile Pioneer vehicles that range from the smallest 500-class all the way up to 1000-class options that can seat four or five. These are hard-working, reliable machines suitable for ranching, forestry, recreation, snow cleaning, and many other jobs. They are built with a range of features that include electric power steering, all-gear transmissions, paddle shifters, self-leveling suspensions, and class-leading QuickFlip seating systems, all to help you get the most of every ride and every job.
