John Deere Powersports Maintenance

The founder of Deere & Company, John Deere was a blacksmith who constructed a steel plow in response to the demand of the farmers developing new lands on the frontier in the 1830s. It was the breakthrough product that allowed John Deere to build his manufacturing business and open his own factory in Moline, Illinois with access to the railroad and power of the Mississippi river. He continued to improve his products based on customers’ suggestions. Some may think that his efforts aided the development of Western agriculture, facilitating migration to the American Great Plains with thicker soil in the 19th century. In 2013, “The Smithsonian Magazine” selected John Deere’s plow as one of the 101 objects that changed the course of the United States history.

In 1863, Deere launched his first riding cultivator. During the next few years, John Deere received three patents on molds for casting his steel plows. In 1868, Deere & Company was established where John and his son Charles Deere had 65% of the share. In 1876, the “Leaping deer” trademark was registered which is the longest continuously used trademark among American Fortune 500 companies. Deere started manufacturing corn planters in 1877. Today, planting machines are still produced on the original site in Moline, Illinois. In 1918, John Deere acquired the Waterloo Gasoline Engine Company for manufacturing gasoline-powered tractors. In 1927, the company produced its first combine. During WWII, Deere manufactured aircraft parts and ammunition, and the company’s employees repaired tanks in France and Belgium. The Consumer Equipment Division opened in 1968, offering lawn and garden equipment. Today, John Deere is the largest agriculture machinery manufacturer in the world employing about 67,000 people worldwide.

In 1971, the slogan “Nothing Runs Like a Deere,” which is still in use today, advertised the new line of snowmobiles that included such models as the JDX, JD, Cyclone, Liquifire, Snowfire, Sprinterfire, Sportfire, Trailfire, and others. John Deere snowmobiles are powered by engines specifically designed and made by Kioritz and Kawasaki. In 1980, John Deere was chosen as the official snowmobile supplier during the Winter Olympic Games. Due to decline on the snowmobile market, the whole lineup was sold to Polaris Industries in 1984. In 1992, the company launched the Gator Utility Vehicle (UTV). The Gator TH 6x4 model is able to tow up to 1,200 pounds and carry up to 800 pounds in its cargo box. Gators are mainly used in farms, but also can be converted for various off-road or military applications. John Deere offers several modifications of the Gator, including the Traditional Series for medium-duty work, the Compact Series similar to golf cart size good for personal use, the XUV Series for extreme applications that can be equipped with a snow plow, including the popular RSX860 model, and the High-Performance Series (HPX) for heavy-duty use. The Trail Gator is an off-road variant of the vehicle that is most suitable for recreational use. The Turf Gator is designed to work at golf courses. Starting in 2004, John Deere produced the line of all-terrain vehicles (ATV) in partnership with Bombardier, the Canadian manufacturer of recreational products. The John Deere Buck is powered by a 500 cc or 650 cc engine by Rotax. The line was discontinued in 2007.
