Starting in 1985, when the first four-wheeled ATV was introduced, these vehicles have been continuously developed and improved. The 2000s marked the period when they rapidly gained popularity, and many new manufacturers appeared on the market. Of course, there were many off-brand products, and just a few companies managed to offer quality and durable machines and survive in a competitive world. Such Chinese brands as Redcat, Kazuma, Zebra, and some others belong to the same Asian company making affordable 50-110cc ATVs for kids, as well as more powerful models (the Brahma 400, DPX 250, KMZ 250, etc.). Redcat and Kazuma products give an ambiguous impression – many owners really like these quads and find them fun to ride, others report about different problems like a leaking carburetor (even after five replacements and repairs), loose bolts, and troubles with ordering new parts.
The Redcat SFX-100 and Kazuma 100-SX are mainly the same quads (only wheel bolt patterns are different) featuring an aggressive design, comfortable seats, LED gauge, nerf bars, wide foot pegs, and clutchless heel-to-toe shifter considered to be convenient for young riders. An air-cooled 4-stroke 108cc engine installed in these ATVs develops 7 hp and allows for reaching the maximum speed of 35 mph; it works with a three-speed semi-automatic transmission. The suspension is pretty much usual for such quads – a single A-Arm design in front and swingarm in the rear. The Redcat DPX-200 is different – it has a larger engine (193cc, also four-stroke), five-speed transmission with a hand clutch, dual A-Arm front suspension, etc. The Kazuma FX 250 was equipped with an automatic transmission having a reverse and develops 17.7 hp; its maximum speed is 55 mph.
In fact, most issues with Redcat quads can be solved, but some other aspects like safety are often ignored by riders. According to the statistics of the National Trauma Data Bank about injuries caused by quads and motorcycles analyzed in 2010, four-wheel ATVs turned out to be even more dangerous than dirt bikes.
