The most widespread way to interconnect the crankshaft and camshaft(s) is by using the timing belt or chain. Nowadays, the latter is more spread than the former because the chain is inherently more reliable and durable – the two words engineers appreciate very much. Hidden behind the sealed case, the timing chain is both protected against the elements and well-lubricated – the two major reasons why the part offers a lasting service life. However, it still has a drawback – it gets stretched over time due to heavy loads pretty much constantly acting upon it. And that’s the reason why the system also includes a tensioner.

Tensioners keep timing chains tightened while compensating for stretching, thus allowing the chain to keep doing its job way longer than it would otherwise be capable of. Tensioners can be spring-loaded or hydraulic. The latter use the pressure of oil to maintain special rubber or plastic plate.
