UTV Timing Gears & Chains

The timing mechanism connects the camshaft(s) at the top of your UTV’s engine with the crankshaft at its bottom via the chain and gears. Many manufacturers claim that the lifetime of the timing chain is equal to that of the whole engine. In some cases, it's also equal to the lifetime of the whole vehicle. And that’s wonderful except for one thing: this lifetime can be short. Your powersports vehicle can serve much longer than the chain or motor, yet the service life of these two greatly depends on proper motor oil and its regular change. Too high viscosity or bad oil makes the chain and gears wear out quicker, but new replacement components allow for resolving the issue.

Suffering heavy tensional loads, the chain tends to stretch over time. Each of its links retains the initial length, but the rollers get thinner in places where they contact the links, which may result in the elongation of about an inch or so. There is a tensioner that compensates loosening for a while, but sooner or later, it reaches the limit. And then, the time for replacements comes.
