While the crankshaft converts the reciprocating motion into rotation, the camshaft does the opposite. The purpose of the cam(s) in your UTV’s engine is to take the rotations delivered from the crank via the timing chain or belt and transform these rotations into the linear motion of the valves. The valves need that in order to open and seal the cylinders in the right sequence, at the right time.
