Powersports Oil Pumps & Components

Browse by Vehicle

One of the most critical parts of any internal combustion engine, an oil pump creates the pressure necessary for sufficient lubrication. If this component fails but the motor keeps running, oil starvation caused by low pressure will result in severe damage to most parts that are subject to friction including engine bearings, cylinder walls, etc. For this reason, oil pumps are made extremely reliable and durable. Most piston engines used in cars and powersports vehicles rely on an eccentric rotor oil pump. Also known as a gerotor pump, it's typically engaged by the crank.

The name “gerotor” implies the design in which the inner gear, or inner rotor, spins inside the outer rotor while also making it rotate at somewhat lower speed. Enclosed in a special housing, such a setup allows for creating rather high oil pressure that gets even higher when revs grow. The pump's capacity is selected according to the engine's characteristics and expected loads. Tight clearances between the lobes of the abovementioned rotors are the necessary condition for good performance. However, over time, these clearances increase.

When they become too big, oil pressure decreases, which can be dangerous for the motor. Grooves or other damages to the rotors contribute to this effect. How do you know when it's time to replace the pump? An oil pressure gauge is a nice instrument, but unfortunately, many vehicles lack it, relying on that light indicator which may start blinking when it's too late. Actually, some people take an opportunity to rebuild or replace an oil pump when making other repairs in that area, for instance, an engine rebuild. In our online store, you will find a large collection of high-quality oil pumps and rebuild kits that include both the inner and outer rotors, gaskets, and other components needed to complete the job.
