UTV Cylinders

A cylinder is the space where all the internal combustion magic happens. This sealed chamber is designed to not only burn the air-fuel mixture but also get rid of the vast amounts of heat the combustion naturally results in. For that, the cylinders employ two major techniques known as air and liquid cooling (oil cooling is essentially the kind of the former). For air cooling, i.e. for releasing heat directly into the atmosphere, the cylinders employ external ribs that drastically increase the surface area allowing metal to contact with more cool air at any given time. Liquid cooling is a bit trickier.

Cooling by means of dedicated fluid implies inner channels located close to the cylinder walls and forming a water jacket. Coolant constantly runs through these channels while relocating thermal energy to the radiator that, subsequently, emits it into the atmosphere. Cracks in metal or head gasket may lead to the coolant getting inside the cylinders, which results in lots of white smoke from the tailpipe. Also, the cylinders are subject to friction caused by piston rings, so their wear is just a matter of time.
