Powersports Engine Gaskets & Seals

The reliability and performance of an internal combustion engine depend on many factors, and the condition of gaskets and seals is one of them. These components provide the necessary tightness of the intake and exhaust manifolds, cylinder head, valve guides, engine cases and covers, shafts, and other parts. All engine components are subject to vibration and expanding or shrinking at high or low temperatures, so seals have to be strong enough to withstand these impacts. Depending on what they are meant for, these parts greatly differ in materials and construction.

Engine gaskets can be made of paper, rubber, silicone, neoprene, PTFE, metal, or their combinations. In each case, a gasket should fill minor irregularities between two surfaces. Multilayer cylinder head gaskets usually have the most complex structure due to the loads and heat they have to endure. These gaskets normally include several layers of steel and elastomer. Oil seals look rather simple, but their design, high precision, and material are what makes a difference. Leading manufacturers use PTFE (short for polytetrafluoroethylene) for the production of sealing edges that make contact with rotating metal parts and help to keep oil inside the motor.

Resistant to high temps and oil, silicone sealants can supplant stock gaskets in many places. However, the number of these places is limited. Small silicone particles that remain after assembling can clog something, get into other crucial mechanisms, or the layer can be insufficient to provide the needed tightness or service life. Also, the sealant can be somewhat difficult to apply (or remove) on complex configurations. When it comes to engine rebuild, it makes sense to purchase gaskets in sets as you save time and money getting everything needed.
